Free basic television?

Loriann Carrigan: So the DTV converter's job is to make the bunny ears work?I live on rural farmland 1hr 20min from New York City.

Leora Klingelhoets: Yes there are still free TV channels IF(big IF) you live in or near a major metropolitan area. De;ending on how close you are to the actual TV tower (antenna) you may be able to use rabbit ears. As the distance increases you will need an outside antenna and possibly a rotator that will allow you to point the antenna in the right direction. Finally, if you're 100 miles or more from the actual brooadcasting site you'll have to deal with cable if it's in your area or satellite. In my area I have to go with cable or satellite. I chose cable simply because there is no contract and basic cable is relatively cheap....Show more

Inell Riesgo: Wow how helpful! I went to tvfool but I don't understand what the results mean. My zip code is 07821. Thank you!

Hubert Jestes: You need to get a DTV receiver and an ant! enna that will receive digital channels the bunny ears will work but the picture will distort like every 2 mins. The receiver cost about $40-$80 and the antenna will cost between $15-$50. Then you will receive all local channels and even channels you didn't know existed.

Deangelo Marchak: >I remember back in the 80's and 90's that all you needed was rabbit ear antennas and you had basicYes there is still free over the air television. All you need to do is connect an antenna to your TV that is suitable for your location, then go into your TV's menu and have it scan for digital antenna signals. You do not need a converter box because your HDTV is new enough to have a digital (ATSC) tuner built into it. The over the air converter boxes are only needed for older TVs that do not have digital tuners built into them. >So the DTV converter's job is to make the bunny ears work? No. The converter boxes receive the new digital broadcasts and convert them to the old analog type so ! people can use their old TV.>I live on rural farmland 1hr 20mi! n from New York City. The hard part is, what is a suitable antenna for your exact location? It is unlikely that plain old "rabbit ears" will do for your location. Even the materials the building is made from can have a drastic effect on how good the TV reception is.Of course, you could ask neighbors what works for them. Otherwise, if you enter your location at the web site below, you can find out how far and in what direction your local TV transmitters are from you. There will also be a "wrapper" which will let other people see what your reception situation is without giving out your address. If you ask a question like "I'm here (insert wrapper), what kind of TV antenna do I need?", you have a better shot at getting a useful answer....Show more
