What features should a car have for it to be as safe as possible?

Tillie Wynott: Side curtain air bags. If you opt for these, all the other stuff comes with it.

Buster Buchko: Most cars now have all the safety features. For example front and side or even curtain airbags. The question you should be asking is how effective are these safety features. I believe to have a GPS system in your car is pure luxury. I would suggest what kind of car (manufacture and model) you are planning to buy. This will narrow down your selection. Some cars are cheap for a reason and have all the safety features you can ever think of. But are they reliable???

Daren Ventrice: # 1 ... make sure the driver is an old wise person. When it comes to safety and security, the weakest link often runs the show.# 2 ... make sure all the safety features of the car are actually used, such as seat belts

Leora Klingelhoets: Dont worry about features so much as the car itself. The previous gen of the Nissan Sentra even with side airbags was the least safe new ! car for years. It was beat out by things like the Focus with only the minimum legal required airbags. Design of the car factors in quite a bit. Look them up in Consumer Reports and look up other crash ratings rather than relying on features that may or may not be effective based on design....Show more

Zelma Casebier: My suggestion is to go to these websiteshttp://www.iihs.org/, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety http://www.ConsumerReports.org/,http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to check out the safety ratings of cars. Each has their own opinions obviously; however, you are looking for the cars that have the highest Thoracic Trauma Index (or TTI) and Head Injury Criterion (HIC). I answered a question about TTI about 5 months ago that will explain TTI and HIC if you want to read it.You may come across different ratings on these sites on particular cars if you do I would recommend going with the The Insurance Institut! e for Highway Safety because they go the extra step and do off! center crash testing. Off center crashes are more likely to occur then head on, T bone, or full on rear collisions.Edit: Your safety features in a nut shell deal with TTI and HIC. You are looking for a car that will have the least amount of passenger compartment intrusion (your TTI) and which has the least amount of head and neck gosling (HIC) during an accident....Show more

Bell Pasco: well the most important ones are the ones required by law seatbelts and front airbags. after those you will want too look for "side curtain" airbags which protect your head from hitting the side of the car in a crash, next look for side airbags these protect your torso and if you have curtain airbags you probably will have side airbags as well. if you are buying a newer car and are spending a decent amount of money you can look for active head restraint seats these protect your neck from whiplash. some of the safer cars too look for are the Vw jetta and Rabbit for cheeper cars also ! you can look at the Saab 9-3 these are cheep used and very safe also Volvo and Audi make very safe cars but you will pay allot for Volvo's and Audis even on the used market. so if you are looking for relatively cheep car i would look at Saab 9-3 between 2003 and 2005 or VW jetta 2003-2005 you should be able to find one of these with side curtain and side airbags for less than $16KIf you are buying new and have some money to spent the Audi A4 and A6 were top pics as well as the Saab 9-3 and Volvo S80 but these are relatively pricey new if you want reasonably priced new cars Subaru legacy and subaru forester both got top picks and vw jettas and rabbits did very well and would have allot of safety features other cars in their class don't. I would stick to mid sized cars or larger as small cars even those with good ratings tend to have more injuries than larger cars....Show more

Dulcie Edis: ... most of the "safest" cars have driver & passenger airbags... side-curtain air! bags... anti-lock brakes... a GPS system... satellite survellience and ! security (like "On-Star") ... some of the higher end vehicles also have headlamps that rotate into your turns with you.Check with "Consumer Reports" to see what cars rate best overall in terms of highway / collision safety. You're only going to be limited by your own budget.(Those "bomb-proof" cars that executives in foreign countries drive around in are pretty darn safe - but I doubt you'll need THAT kind of protection, right?)...Show more

Wilbur Marksberry: if you are apt for the safety driving of your car, choose a car that has a good seat belt; equipped with air bags; auto-lock of doors (just in case you have small kids or old ones at the rear and they might tend to open it while the car is moving/running.) car alarm (in case someone will car jack it) or rob it from the place where you park.
